Nonprofit Directory / Nonprofit Profile
Our mission, since 1988, is to protect, serve and empower children and young adults experiencing abuse, neglect or homelessness.
Founded in 1988, City House provides emergency shelter and transitional residential services to children and young adults experiencing abuse, neglect or homelessness. What began as a six-bed teen homeless shelter in Plano has grown into a multi-faceted 48-bed agency operating a fully licensed state shelter, three transitional residential homes, a Street Outreach Program, and a Resource Center serving our community’s most vulnerable
children and youth.
Emergency Shelter – “My Friends House:”
Our emergency shelter, known as My Friend’s House (MFH), provides 24-hour residential care and services in partnership with Child Protective Services for children removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. RHY (Runaway and Homeless Youth) are also granted support through MFH with an average stay of 21 days, often referred through school districts, the juvenile court system, or word of mouth.
Transitional Living Program – TLP:
Our Transitional Living Program (TLP) is designed to transform the lives of homeless young adults, ages 18 to 21. We currently oversee three homes, all located in Collin County. The program is voluntary, with a thorough application process and barrier-free conditions for participation.
Our objective is to provide these young people with the skills and confidence to be self-sufficient and independent. Throughout the 18-month program, we assist clients in advancing their education and/or career, building savings, and learning the skills needed to be successful adults.
Street Outreach:
Our Street Outreach Program (SOP) is composed of case managers who work with youth experiencing unstable housing, neglect, or abuse. They do this through roving Collin County and managing our Youth Resource Center (YRC).
Whether young adults are needing a shower, new clothes, assistance with their job search or to speak with a counselor, the staff at the YRC can help. We provide access to food, hygiene products, laundry facilities and a safe place to shelter between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays. Additionally, we work with community partners to connect youth with other resources to meet their long-term needs. Located within walking distance of a DART station and bus stop, we are able to provide ample support for at-risk young adults up to 21 years old.
Counseling:
In addition to the counseling provided for clients in our programs, City House offers free community counseling services. These sessions are with licensed therapists who are experienced in providing effective, trauma-informed, solution-focused individual and family therapy with proven results using evidence-based counseling methods. City House serves those needing counseling up to age 22. Free counseling is short-term.
In an effort to prevent youth from leaving home, City House provides short-term counseling to families and/or individuals. Our therapists work with those who are looking to stay in front of family challenges before they turn into runaway or homeless situations.
