Nonprofit Directory / Nonprofit Profile
Chamberlain Ballet is committed to presenting excellent ballet to enrich the North Texas community, enlighten with arts education, and encourage through outreach programs.
With a 40 year history of advancing the arts in North Texas, Chamberlain Ballet provides pre-professional training to students embarking on careers in dance and has served thousands of students over the years in its pre-professional division and educational outreach programs by providing classes and performance opportunities which underscore excellence in the art of dance and serve as the catalyst of the organization in fulfilling its mission. Chamberlain Ballet’s professional association with organizations such as New York City Ballet, The School of American Ballet (SAB), and American Ballet Theatre came about as the result of the founder, Kathy Chamberlain, and her experience studying dance at SAB on a Ford Foundation Scholarship. This association has led to a continuing connection with master instructors, choreographers, and performers from New York City Ballet and beyond who instruct Chamberlain Ballet students and appear onstage alongside them in classical and original works, allowing the nonprofit to grow into its present form as a driving force in the North Texas arts community. From participation in outreach dance classes for underserved populations to performances of the highest standard, Chamberlain Ballet dancers are known throughout the region for their ability to produce quality programs while also serving as mentors to students in the Releve’ After School Dance Program and the Shining Stars program which focus on the social-emotional growth of students in low-economic settings and those with disabilities.
Chamberlain Ballet presents a full performing Season each year which includes special appearances with other local arts organizations such as Celebrate the Arts in Plano, TX, The Plano International Festival, Dance Plano!, and Dance Planet in Dallas. The Fall season is spent in preparation for the annual production of The Nutcracker which is presented over Thanksgiving weekend at the Eisemann Center in Richardson and features New York City Ballet guest artists and often includes the fan favorite event, The Sugar Plum Tea. Community Auditions take place in September with almost 100 children being cast in roles such as Mice, Angels, and BonBons of all types! The production includes a Community Connections performance which is provided free of charge to 1500 clients of local social service agencies through a generous grant from the TEB Foundation. Other foundations such as The Andrea-Mennen Family Foundation and the Texas Instruments Foundation have also underwritten this extraordinary gift to the community. December brings The Nutcracker Suites to various venues by special invitation and features excerpts from the beloved ballet. Throughout the school year and summer, free dance instruction is provided to the community through multiple programs including The Releve’ After School Program, Shining Stars, Jumpstart for Arts, and Frisco Community Master Class Series which serve students from age 6 to 24. In the early Spring, Chamberlain Ballet dancers take part in an intensive mentoring experience provided through the Artist-In-Residence program which provides key dance professionals from around the United States who instruct the dancers daily and set a new work on the company to add to the Chamberlain Ballet repertoire. An informal presentation of the work is presented to the public with a free Community Engagement presentation which includes a Question and Answer session with the artist. Past contributors have included Andy Noble of NobleMotion Dance, Carla Stallings-Lippert, former Principal Ballerina with Boston Ballet and Soloist with American Ballet Theatre, and Tyler Angle, Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet among many others. Spring also brings the annual Spring Production which is either a mixed repertoire performance that includes dancers from other companies such as Bruce Wood Dance Dallas, Orlando Ballet, and Ballet West among others, or a special presentation from the Family Ballet Series which includes works such as Peter and the Wolf, Charlotte’s Web, and Hansel and Gretel. The Season closes out with a series of smaller showcases for family and friends which include the students from the educational outreach programs and allow for these students and their families to experience a complete theatrical performance with their children in the spotlight. These performances are very meaningful for the students and their families as they take the stage, often for the very first time, with all of the trappings that a real performance provides including costuming, professional sound and lights, and a reception afterwards. Many Chamberlain Ballet volunteers remark that these are some of their most favorite performances of the entire Season!
